The machine is yours. Here is how to teach with it.
The first week. The first three lessons. One machine and twenty-five students. What to stock, what must never go on the bed, and the short boring maintenance that keeps it alive.
The machine is in the room. This page is about the part nobody sells you: getting it used.
Most laser cutters that go quiet in a school do not break. They sit under a cover because one member of staff knew how to run it and then moved on, or because the first attempt with a full class went badly enough that nobody wanted a second. Everything below exists to stop that.
The first week

Run the machine yourself, alone, before any student sees it.
Cut a square. Engrave your name. Cut the same square again and check it lands in the same place. Ten minutes of this tells you more than the manual.

Check the extraction is actually pulling.
Hold a strip of paper at the bed with the lid open and the extractor running. If it does not move, nothing else on this page matters. Cutting without working extraction puts smoke in the room and residue on the lens.

Make one jig.
A simple corner stop cut from scrap. It is the difference between aligning every job by eye and dropping material in and pressing go.

Cut a material test grid.
One sheet of each stock you hold, engraved with a grid of power and speed combinations, labelled. Pin it on the wall. This single sheet answers nine out of ten settings questions for the rest of the year.

Write the rules on the wall, not in a folder.
What may be cut, what may never be cut, who supervises, what to do if there is a flame. A laminated sheet above the machine gets read. A policy document does not.
What to teach first
Resist starting with the software. Students who cut something in the first lesson come back; students who spend a lesson on a CAD interface do not.
A full class and one machine
This is the part that catches new labs out. The arithmetic is unforgiving and it is better to do it before the lesson than during it.
A two-minute job, twenty-five students, is fifty minutes of machine time before anyone has made a mistake. A single period does not contain that. The lab that works has a plan for it:
- Batch the cut. Nest all twenty-five names on one sheet and run it once while the class does something else. One job, eight minutes, done.
- Stagger the groups. Five at the machine, twenty on design, rotate. Students waiting their turn are students not learning.
- Run the long jobs outside the lesson. Set the big cut going at the end of the day. It is finished before the next class arrives.
- Keep one operator. A student per lesson, rotated, who runs the machine for everyone else. They learn it properly and the queue stops.
Materials worth stocking
Hold few materials, deeply. A lab with three stock materials it knows the settings for produces better work than one with twelve it does not.
PVC, vinyl and anything containing chlorine release hydrogen chloride gas when lasered. It corrodes the machine from the inside out and it harms whoever is in the room. Vinyl banner offcuts, some faux leather, some binder covers and most cheap plastic sheet are PVC.
If you cannot identify a material, it does not go on the bed. Teach students to ask rather than to assume - a sheet donated by a parent or picked up from a workshop is the usual way PVC enters a school lab.
Keeping it running
Laser maintenance is short and boring and skipping it is the single most common cause of a machine that "stopped working properly".
- Clean the lens and mirrors weekly if the machine is in daily use. A dirty lens does not fail - it just cuts worse and worse until somebody assumes the tube is dying.
- Empty the cutting table. Offcuts in the bed catch fire.
- Watch the filter life on the extraction unit. A saturated filter stops protecting the room long before anyone notices a smell.
- Never leave a running machine unattended. Not for a phone call, not for a fire drill, not for the last five minutes of a job.
